Today is the day where in North India people celibrate the Raksha bandhan. Where a sister ties a Rakhi to his brother praying good health and wealth for him. She is gifted some gifts back by her brother.
In South India, its the Avani Avittam, where guys who were done UpaNayanam (wearing the Sacred Thread), would have a new thread worn. This is celebrated by the Brahmin Community in South India. This is a two day function where every guy is required to Chant Gayathri Mantram on the second day and in the first day(Today), he is worn a new sacred thread.
So Happy Raksha Bandan and Avani Avittam.
